The Romantic era lasted from the 1800s to the 1860s. American Romanticism was a period were people valued feelings over reason. People were more concerned on person feelings and beliefs rather than actual reason and logic. American authors were more tempted to break rules and society norm. Rather than follow tradition and old standards, they began to make their own rules and standards. Arthurs were more self-reliant rather than depending on others and the government officials. Romantic writers emphasized the new feeling of individuality, and creativity.
One Romantic writer was Willa Cather. She wrote the novel, O Pioneers!, an American historical novel that gave details on the rivalry of land claims of ownership between White Europeans and Native Americans. Another novel is The Last of the Mohicans. James Fenimore Cooper wrote this book. The book takes setting in the French and Indian War. Another book in the Romantic era is Moby Dick by Herman Melville. The book depicts the journey a sailor takes to avenge his friends’ tragic accident.
Oliver Wendell Holmes published “Old Ironside”. This poem gives respect to the warship, USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned ship in the world, still afloat. “Thanatopsis” was a poem written by William Cullen Bryant, which means consideration of death. The word is deprived from the Greek word thantos.
A short story from Washington Irving was “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”. The story depicts gothic fiction and an eerie, dark presence.
